ValorCares Foundation has worked with schools and communities throughout the northern part of Southeast Wisconsin, including the Random Lake area, to help provide needed classroom supplies.

Volunteers can help collect, organize, pack, transport, and distribute those materials.

Businesses can participate by hosting collection drives or organizing employee volunteer days.

Some of the most useful things you can volunteer are your knowledge and experience.

There is a lot to do before Santa ever walks through the door.

At ValorCares Foundation, our mission is centered around a simple idea: building stability through access.

“Access” can sound like a big, abstract word. In practice, it is often something much simpler.

It can mean having the supplies needed to participate in class.

It can mean finding a book that sparks an interest in reading.

It can mean knowing where to turn when your family needs support.

It can mean connecting a school with a business that wants to help.

Sometimes improving access is not about creating something entirely new. It is about identifying a barrier and helping remove it.

Small Barriers Can Have a Big Impact

Many of the challenges people experience in their communities are not caused by a complete lack of resources.

Sometimes the resource exists, but it is difficult to reach.

Sometimes people do not know it is available.

Sometimes the cost of one item creates an obstacle.

Sometimes an organization knows exactly what it needs but does not have the connections or resources to provide it.

Literacy Is a Foundation

September 8 marks International Literacy Day, and 2026 marks the 60th anniversary of the global observance.

UNESCO describes literacy as a fundamental building block for acquiring knowledge, skills and greater opportunity. Despite decades of progress, the organization reports that four in ten children worldwide are still not reaching minimum proficiency in reading.

Those numbers are global.

But supporting literacy is also something communities can do locally.

It happens when a teacher puts the right book in a student’s hands.

When a parent reads with a child.

When a classroom has enough books to give students choices.

When a neighborhood makes reading materials easier to access.

And sometimes it happens when a child simply discovers one story that makes them want to read another.

Access Matters

Children are naturally curious.

The challenge is making sure they have opportunities to explore that curiosity.

Access to books at home, at school and throughout the community gives children more chances to find subjects, characters and stories that connect with them.

Not every child will fall in love with the same book.

UNESCO’s theme for International Literacy Day 2026 is “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.” The theme recognizes literacy not simply as an academic skill, but as something connected to participation, opportunity and stronger communities.

We like that idea.

Strong communities are built by people who have opportunities to learn, contribute and imagine something better.

There is something special about the first day of school.

Fresh notebooks. Sharpened pencils. New routines. New classrooms. New possibilities.

For students, it can be exciting.

It can also be stressful.

Walking into a classroom without the supplies you need can make a student feel different before the first lesson has even started. And when families are balancing the rising cost of school supplies, clothing, meals and everything else that comes with a new school year, even a relatively small classroom list can create another financial strain.

That is why being “ready for school” means more than having a backpack.

It means giving students the opportunity to walk into their classrooms prepared to participate, learn and belong.

The Cost of Getting a Classroom Ready

Families are not the only ones filling the gaps.

Teachers routinely spend their own money preparing classrooms and purchasing supplies for their students.

According to AdoptAClassroom.org's 2025 national teacher survey, educators spent an average of $895 out of pocket on classroom supplies during the 2024–2025 school year. The median school-provided supply budget reported by teachers was just $200, and 97% of respondents said that budget was not enough to meet their classroom needs.

At the same time, families are facing higher back-to-school costs. A 2026 analysis from The Century Foundation and Groundwork Collaborative found that a typical basket of school supplies costs 7.7% more than it did last year .

Those pressures eventually meet in the classroom.

A teacher realizes there aren't enough headphones.

A student needs a notebook.

The classroom could use more books.

Markers run dry.

A science activity requires materials that aren't in the school budget.

And, far too often, an educator simply buys what is missing.

Why ValorCares Was Founded: Three Perspectives, One Shared Purpose

ValorCares Foundation began with a shared belief: when communities listen well and build intentionally, stability grows and opportunity follows.

That belief was shaped by different experiences in military service, education, leadership, and community involvement. Although each perspective was unique, they pointed toward the same need: support systems should be thoughtful, dependable, and built around the people they are meant to serve.

Those shared experiences became the foundation for ValorCares.

Bryan’s Perspective: Building Support That Lasts

For Bryan Sevener, the ideas behind ValorCares were shaped through service.

As a veteran, Bryan experienced firsthand how structure, guidance, and meaningful support can influence the direction of a person’s life. The right resources, provided at the right time, can create stability and open doors that may otherwise have remained closed.

Later, through his work in education and leadership—as a professor, former school board member, and now CEO of ValorTech—he saw those same principles appear again and again.

Strong communities are not built through isolated efforts. They grow when people listen to one another, understand the challenges around them, and work together to create solutions that can endure.

In many ways, the earliest conversations that led to ValorCares began in exactly that way: through dialogue, collaboration, and a shared desire to strengthen the community.

Those experiences helped spark the idea of creating something more intentional—a foundation committed to listening first and building support systems designed to last.

That idea would eventually become ValorCares Foundation.

Amanda’s Perspective: Creating Stability in the Classroom

For Amanda Sevener, the importance of stability became clear through more than 15 years of work in general and special education.

In the classroom, she saw that confidence often begins long before a lesson starts.

Students are better positioned to learn when they feel prepared, supported, and secure. Families are better able to encourage that learning when they have access to the resources and connections they need.

Amanda also saw how seemingly small gaps in access could quietly shape a student’s experience. A missing supply, an unmet need, or a lack of dependable support might appear minor from the outside, but it can affect a student’s confidence, participation, and ability to focus.

Addressing those gaps does more than provide a temporary solution. It can help create an environment in which students feel ready to engage, grow, and succeed.

Those experiences shaped Amanda’s commitment to building spaces where students can move forward with confidence through access, consistency, and connection.

Her perspective continues to guide the work of ValorCares today. The goal is not simply to respond to immediate needs, but to develop thoughtful support systems rooted in what students and families genuinely need.

Chloe’s Perspective: Showing Up in the Moments That Matter

For Chloe Spenner, the work is about showing up in the moments that shape a student’s experience.

As an educator, Chloe saw how stability, access, and support come together through everyday interactions. These moments may not always be visible to others, but their impact can last far beyond the classroom.

Meaningful support is rarely defined by one dramatic moment. More often, it is created through a series of smaller ones: walking alongside a student, helping a family navigate a challenge, creating consistency, and building trust over time.

Each interaction helps strengthen a student’s confidence and reinforces the belief that they are not facing their challenges alone.

Bryan, Amanda, and Chloe each came to this work through different paths, but their experiences led to a shared purpose.

ValorCares Foundation exists to listen, connect, and help create lasting systems of support. Its work is rooted in the belief that stronger communities grow when people have the stability, resources, and relationships they need to move forward with confidence.

The foundation is still growing, and so is its understanding of how it can serve most effectively. That is why listening remains central to everything ValorCares does.
