Wanting to help your community is easy.


Figuring out where to start can be harder.


Maybe you have a few hours available on a weekend. Maybe your employer offers a volunteer day. Maybe you want to get more involved in your community but cannot commit to something every week.


Or maybe you have a skill, profession, or connection that could help someone else.


The good news is that volunteering does not have to look one specific way.


Across Southeast Wisconsin, community organizations rely on volunteers to support students, families, educators, events, literacy programs, and other local needs.


Whether you live near Port Washington, Menomonee Falls, Random Lake, or elsewhere in Southeast Wisconsin, there are plenty of ways to make a local impact.


Here are seven places to start.

1. Help at a Community Event


Community events require a lot of work that attendees may never see.


Before the doors open, someone has to set up.


Someone has to organize materials.


Someone has to welcome families, answer questions, keep things moving, and clean everything up afterward.


For volunteers who cannot make a long-term commitment, helping at an event can be one of the easiest ways to get involved.


A few hours of your time can make it possible for an organization to spend more of its energy focused on the people the event was created to serve.

2. Support Local Literacy Efforts


Access to books can create opportunities far beyond the classroom.


Volunteers can help collect donated books, sort them, organize them, prepare them for distribution, and restock community libraries.


There are opportunities for people who like working with their hands, too.


Through ValorCares Foundation's Take a Look, Inside a Book program, volunteers and community partners help build, maintain, and stock Little Free Libraries throughout Southeast Wisconsin.


Carpenters, builders, painters, drivers, businesses, and anyone willing to lend a hand can contribute.


You do not have to be an educator to support literacy.


Sometimes helping starts with getting a book into the hands of someone who needs it.

3. Help Students Start School Ready to Learn


A notebook, backpack, set of pencils, or box of crayons may seem small.


For students and families trying to stretch a household budget, those expenses add up quickly.


School supply programs help make sure students can walk into the classroom with the tools they need to participate and learn.


ValorCares Foundation has worked with schools and communities throughout the northern part of Southeast Wisconsin, including the Random Lake area, to help provide needed classroom supplies.


Volunteers can help collect, organize, pack, transport, and distribute those materials.


Businesses can participate by hosting collection drives or organizing employee volunteer days.


The work may feel simple.

The impact is not.

4. Share Your Career Experience


Some of the most useful things you can volunteer are your knowledge and experience.


Students are constantly being asked what they want to do with their future.


It is difficult to answer that question when you do not know what many careers actually look like.

  • What does someone working in cybersecurity do?
  • How do you become an electrician?
  • What is it like to own a business?
  • What happens inside a manufacturing company?
  • What does a designer, accountant, nurse, technician, salesperson, or engineer actually do every day?


Career conversations, workplace visits, hands-on experiences, mentorship, and demonstrations can introduce young people to possibilities they may never have considered.


You do not need an impressive title.


You just need something useful to share.

5. Become a Mentor


Sometimes one of the most valuable things an adult can give a young person is consistency.


Mentorship gives students another person who can listen, answer questions, provide encouragement, and help them think through opportunities and challenges.



Good mentors do not need to have every answer.


They show up.

They take an interest.

They share perspective.


And they help remind a young person that someone believes their goals are worth pursuing.

6. Volunteer at Breakfast with Santa in Port Washington


Holiday events can create some of the busiest volunteer days of the year.


ValorCares Foundation is preparing for Breakfast with Santa in Port Washington on Sunday, November 29, and volunteers will be a huge part of making the event happen.


There is a lot to do before Santa ever walks through the door.


Volunteers may help with:

  • Event setup
  • Welcoming families
  • Activities
  • Organizing materials
  • Helping throughout the event
  • Cleanup
  • Other day-of-event needs


You do not need special experience.


You just need some time and a willingness to help create a memorable experience for local families.
